8vo, 18cm, 80ff (of which 56ff used). Original tan roan (lacking most of leather spine covering), blind stamped covers with rule frame with toothed design at head and tail with inner panel of arabesques and central gilt fleur de lys.
Extensive travel journal compiled over the period of forty years, comprising some dozen separate journeys carried out across the British West country; Sussex; Wales & Ireland; the East coast; the Isle of Man (1863 & 1887); France, Switzerland & Italy; Belgium & Netherlands; the English Lakes and more. The most extensively described tours are of Scotland (c.2000 words) & France, Switzerland and Italy (c.3500 words). The latter is priced by Cooper at £70, around £9000, and took 30 days.
We find our Mr Cooper tasting clotted cream for the first time in Devon; viewing the Menai Bridge “...lasting monument to the inventive genius of Robert Stevenson; visiting Daniel O’Connell’s grave in Dublin’s Glasnevin cemetery and walking around Cloonee lakes; taking a steamer down Scotland’s Crinan & Caledonian Canals; taking the air and watching the firework illuminations in Scarborough “Town well situated on a bold & rocky slope...very bracing, healthy place;” watching sailing regattas at Yarmouth; taking his leisure in the Tullieries Garden in Paris & a Gondola in Venice “with a Scotch lady & two gentlemen;” tasting “coffee à la glace - deliciously cool;” taking in the “fine view of the sea” from the drawing room of the Castle Mona hotel in Douglas, Isle of Man in this kaleidoscope of travel images carried out over the best part of a lifetime.
